Did the Election of 1828 Represent a Democratic Revolt of the People?

Read the articles from "Taking Sides Clashing Views in US History: Vol. 1". Based on the excerpts by Sean Wilentz and David Walker Howell, determine whether the election of 1828 represented a democratic revolt of the American people.  Use the following guiding questions to develop and support your response.  What were the major changes that had taken place in politics by the 1820's?  What were the 3 major issues in the election of 1828? What tactics were used by Jackson to build his campaign?  How did the election of 1828 lead to the development of a two party competition?  In 1828, what methods were used by both parties to gain support?  What factors led to Jackson's win and Adam's loss?  Be sure to respond to two classmates blogs.

XYZ Affair/ Sedition Act

Read excerpts about the XYZ Affair and reponses to the Alien and Sedition Acts.  Excerpts can be found on Edmodo.  What accusations did President Adams make against France?  What were the arguments in favor of the passage of the Sedition Acts by Congress?  What was Washington's and Jefferson's responses?  Why did they feel this way?  Who wrote the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions and why were they written?  What concept did they present with regards to state's rights versus national rights?  This is due Friday, February 6 by 11:20 am.

Constitutional Compromise

Read the secondary source "Compromise 1: Philadelphia Story", primary source documents "Letter from Madison to Washington" and Letter from Jefferson to Madison".  What were the concerns of the Founding Fathers with regards to the need to re-write the A of C?  What events spurred conversation about the need for revisements?  What were the most controversial aspects discussed during the Constitutional Convention?  Why were they controversial and what were the final decisions?

Slavery in Colonial America

Read the assigned three articles about slavery in Colonial America. ("Slavery is Justified", "The Conscience of a Slave Trader" and "Stono River Rebellion") Write a blog in response to the following guiding questions: How involved were Africans, themselves, in the slave trade? Describe the point of view of the slave trader. Was their a valid economic basis for slavery in the colonies? What did the behavior of slaves at the Stono Rebellion suggest about the feelings of the slaves and the character of slavery in the colonial south? You must write a minimum of three parargraphs in response to these questions and you must respond to a minimum of two two blogs from your classmates responses.
